Cafe Science Extra to hear about the possibilities of 'Wonderful Wetlands'

The possibility of using wetland resources to harvest low-cost renewable energy will be discussed at the next Cafe Science Extra event scheduled for Dundee.

Dr Kiran Tota-Maharaj, from Abertay University, will describe how we can access a sustainable energy source by creating constructed wetlands and integrating water-sourced heat pumps into them. He will give a talk, entitled, 'Wonderful Wetlands - Getting Low Cost, Low Carbon Energy from Constructed Wetlands' at Dundee Science Centre on Wednesday, 12th February.

'As constructed wetlands are engineered systems which store water and filter out pollutants, many of the barriers to generating energy from natural wetlands are overcome,' explained Dr Tota-Maharaj.

'In my talk, I will be describing a novel method for combining natural processes, engineered water management and sustainable technologies to provide the multiple benefits of wastewater treatment, heating and cooling within urban developments.'

Cafe Science was launched in January 2008, and has attracted over 5000 visitors since then. The monthly events are informal discussions led by leading local researchers that allow members of the public the opportunity to learn more about the ground-breaking science happening in Dundee. Led by the University of Dundee's Public Outreach team, the Cafe Science series also features guest speakers to discuss topics suggested by members of the public.

'Wonderful Wetlands' takes place at Dundee Science Centre from 6pm on Wednesday, 12th February. Entry is free and open to all but places are limited so it is advised that visitors arrive early to avoid disappointment.
