Bright Club Dundee #13: Women in Science Special

Funny female academics from across Scotland will be performing stand-up in Dundee next week as part of the Women in Science Festival 2014.

Bright Club, the movement established by scholars out to dispel the stereotype of the stuffy academic by finding new ways to communicate their research, will host a special event women-led event at Braes, Perth Road, on Tuesday, 18th March.

The show will cover computing, psychology, animal and human biology, physics and material science as part of the celebration of women working science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Taking to the stage will be Dr Karen Petrie (University of Dundee), Dr Daphna Buchsbaum, (University of St. Andrews), Lucy Oldham (University of Edinburgh), Dr Anne Pawsey (University Aberdeen) and qualified physiotherapist Elaine Miller.

The show will be compered by self-confessed geek and very funny comedian Sian Bevan while the presence of Adam Julians will help to redress the gender balance.

“This is a great chance to hear from several very funny women and one very funny man at an event designed to help mark the contribution to women in science,” said event organiser Dr Jon Urch, Public Engagement Coordinator at the University of Dundee. “They will be covering the whole scientific spectrum while getting the funny side of their research across and showing why it’s importance of attracting women to STEM subjects.”

Women in Science 2014 will also highlight the many opportunities there are for women to pursue a career in science and related subjects. It is the only festival in the World to focus on celebrating women in science and this year will present a range of film screenings, exhibitions, talks and family fun days.

The Dundee-based festival is running until March 24th and incorporates the National Science and Engineering Week, as well as running alongside Dundee Women's Festival.

The festival is supported by many of the internationally acclaimed female scientists and researchers working at institutions in Dundee, and is a collaboration between the Universities of Dundee and Abertay, the James Hutton Institute, Hannah Maclure Centre and Dundee Science Centre.

‘Bright Club Dundee #13: Women in Science Special’ takes place at Braes, Perth Road, on Tuesday, 18th March.
