‘A Celebration of Poetry’ on Wednesday, 24th September

Dundee University Review of the Arts will next week host ‘A Celebration of Poetry’ ahead of one of the UK’s most prestigious award ceremonies.
The event will be held at the Visual Research Centre, Dundee Contemporary Arts, on Wednesday, 24th September. It takes place a week before the winners of the 2014 Forward Poetry Prizes are announced, and shortlisted poems will be read at the event. Participants will then have the chance to discuss their favourites and write their own verses inspired by them.
A Celebration of Poetry will be led by Beth McDonough, newly appointed Writer-in-Residence at DCA, and Lindsay Macgregor of Platform Poetry.
DURA is an online arts review magazine launched by the University’s English programme. It aims to contribute to the local arts scene while giving students writing and publishing opportunities that they might not have had previously.
General Editor Dr Gail Low said, “A Celebration of Poetry brings reviewers together with the general public to talk about which collection they think will win the prize, and which they like. The second part of the event will be given over to a poetry writing workshop for attendees based on the work they've heard.
“Reviews of titles shortlisted for Forward Poetry Prizes can be found at our DURA pages, as well as some of the nominated poems themselves.”
Created in 1991 by William Sieghart, the Forward Arts Foundation awards three different poetry prizes annually - best collection, best debut collection, and best single poem. The prestigious prizes celebrate the best of the year’s poetry, honouring exciting new voices alongside established stars and will be awarded at a ceremony in London on Thursday, 30th September.
A Celebration of Poetry takes place from 5-7pm on Wednesday, 24th September. Entry is free but booking through DCA reception is advised.
