£5m funding boost for V&A at Dundee from Creative Scotland

V&A at Dundee has been awarded £5m from National Lottery funds through Creative Scotland to help establish an international centre of design for Scotland.
Designed by the celebrated Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, V&A at Dundee is the flagship of the city’s ambitious waterfront redevelopment plans.
Philip Long, Director of V&A at Dundee welcomed Creative Scotland’s support, which he says will play a vital role in the realisation of the groundbreaking project. “This is fantastic news for V&A at Dundee. We look forward to working closely with Creative Scotland on the delivery of truly innovative activity that nurtures, promotes and inspires contemporary design creativity across the country.

- V&A at Dundee will be an international centre for design, housed in a world-class building at the heart of Dundee’s revitalised waterfront. It will host major exhibitions, celebrate design heritage, inspire and promote contemporary talent, and encourage design innovation for the future.
- V&A at Dundee will have access to thousands of Scottish-related items from the V&A’s world-renowned collection for its Scottish Design Galleries, supplemented by objects loaned from collections of national significance across Scotland and beyond. In parallel, temporary exhibition galleries will host a variety of outstanding international touring exhibitions from the V&A each year.
- V&A at Dundee is being delivered by Design Dundee Ltd, a partnership between the Victoria and Albert Museum – the world’s greatest museum of art and design – and Dundee City Council, the University of Dundee, Abertay University and Scottish Enterprise.
- The Scottish Government has committed £15m towards the project’s £45million capital budget. In January, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) awarded a further £9.4m (of which £8m is towards capital), plus £200,000 development funding. Today, Creative Scotland has awarded £4.5m towards capital, plus £0.5m towards revenue and pre-opening development costs. A further £15m is also being sought from private sources, corporate, generous philanthropic pledges and gifts with £6.7m already raised towards this goal.
- Construction is on schedule to start this summer. It is anticipated the building will complete in late 2016, with the first full year of programming in 2017.
