£10,000 recognition for Breast Foot Forward

A successful partnership between a leading cancer charity and the University of Dundee has been rewarded with a £10,000 award from the Alliance Trust.

The Dundee-based financial services company named ‘Breast Foot Forward’ as winner of the Alliance Trust Charity Award for 2014. Representatives from the charity partners will receive a cheque for the amount from Alliance Trust staff at the University’s Institute of Sport & Exercise (ISE) on Tuesday, 5th August.

Breast Foot Forward have been working in partnership with ISE over the last three years to host the fund-and awareness-raising Twilight Walk and have given financial support to the development of Move More Dundee, a community exercise referral programme for people living with and beyond cancer.

Hazel Ednie, Move More Dundee Coordinator at ISE, said, “Everyone involved in this partnership is delighted to receive this award in recognition of the work we have carried out over the past three years. This will help us to continue our work and hopeful enable more people to enjoy the benefits that come with exercise following a cancer diagnosis.”

Breast Foot Forward is a charity raising money in order to improve the standard of breast cancer treatment and research in Scotland. More than 300 fundraisers took part in the 2014 Twilight Walk in Dundee in April.

Since its inception in 2011, there have been almost 150 referrals to the Move More programme. Work is ongoing to develop the programme and to ensure more local people living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis can access appropriate physical activity opportunities. Staying active after a cancer diagnosis can provide many benefits including; regaining and improving physical function, improving quality of life and reducing the long term and late side effects of cancer treatment.

Five other local charities were shortlisted for the Alliance Trust Charity Award for 2014 before the company’s employees voted Breast Foot Forward as the winner. Liz Milligan, a Trustee of the charity, Hazel Ednie, Brian Ewing, Director of ISE, and Professor Pete Downes, Principal of the University, will be presented with the award from Donald McPherson, Chairman of the Alliance Trust Staff Foundation and other representatives from the company on Tuesday, 5th August.
