New exhibition explores Jamaica through the lens
Eye-catching photographs of Jamaica since the 1800s, including postcard-like scenes captured by Dundee company Valentine & Sons, will go on display at the University of Dundee this weekend. The Moving Jamaica: Scottish-Caribbean Connections and Local-Global Journeys exhibition contrasts photographs taken in the 19th Century with those taken by contemporary photographers, Varun Baker and Stephen McLaren. Mercury rising for Dundee space technology
Hardware developed in Dundee will this weekend embark on a seven-year, 48 million-mile mission to Mercury. When the BepiColombo mission to Mercury launches from Kourou, French Guiana on Saturday 20 October it will be equipped with SpaceWire, a computer network developed by University of Dundee and spin-out company STAR-Dundee that connects instruments, processors and other onboard systems. Dundee’s first Professor of Biochemistry returns to campus
The University of Dundee welcomed back its first Professor of Biochemistry to campus today, as he visited the department and colleagues who he helped bring together more than 40 years ago. Peter Garland who joined the University in 1970, said he was delighted to return and show off his legacy to his daughter and son. Under Peter’s leadership from 1970 to 1984, the biochemistry department, now the School of Life Sciences, became one of the strongest in the UK. €1 million project investigates the place of minorities in Europe
A consortium of European resereachers, including from the Universities of St Andrews and Dundee, have been awarded a €1 million grant to explore the experience of minorities and the ways this affects their inclusion in or their alienation from the majority in society. The prestigious funding by the Volkswagen Foundation will see the team to focus on two specific minorities – Muslims and Roma people.
