Thousands of students arrive for Freshers Week 2015

The University of Dundee this week welcomes over 3000 new students from almost 90 countries for the new academic year.

Professor Sir Pete Downes, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University, is leading the traditional greeting ceremony in the Caird Hall today, Monday, 7th September. It takes place as part of Freshers Week 2015, a range of events organised to ensure that starting life at Dundee is made as easy as possible for the new arrivals.

“It is always an immense pleasure to be able to welcome our new students to the University, whether they are from Dundee, elsewhere in Scotland and the UK or further afield,” said Professor Downes.

“This week marks the start of a new chapter of their lives, one that will bring them into contact with inspirational mentors and peers. They will meet some of the finest minds in their respective fields, begin lifelong friendships, and savour a student experience that has yet again been voted the best in Scotland by students themselves.”

The University was recently rated number one in Scotland in the National Student Survey and also in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey, a position it has held for the past six years.

The NSS also once again named Dundee University Students’ Association (DUSA) as the top students’ union in Scotland and one of the very best in the UK. DUSA is playing host to Freshers’ Week activities throughout this week.

A small army of staff, supported by student volunteers, are set to help the new arrivals settle in as they arrive in the city. New students can also access information through the Freshers Week 2015 website, which offers support and information on everything from study preparation and services on campus, to accommodation and local shopping.
