The Susan Reid Memorial Prize

Social Work students Diane Murray and Kari Gallacher have been named as the first winners of the Susan Reid Memorial Prize, named in honour of the former librarian at the University of Dundee.
Susan worked as a Liaison Librarian at the University’s Library & Learning Centre for her entire professional career, spanning 34 years. She sadly died last year.
She also contributed to the BA and MSc programmes in Social Work at the University, providing inspirational accounts of the impact of disability on a family and practical guidance for potential social workers in assessing and working with carers’ needs.
Susan’s family have made a donation to the University to establish the Memorial Prize, which will see awards given to social work students for at least the next ten years. The recipient each year will be an undergraduate student who has achieved the highest overall grade in the third year of the BA Social Work programme with Diane and Kari taking the inaugural award.
They were presented with their medals by Susan’s mother, Irene Hannan, sister, Lesley Coull, and son, Jamie Reid.
In a statement, the family said, “It means so much to our family that by way of this award Susan’s name will continue to be spoken and that she will always be remembered in the place that was such an important part of her life.”
Alyson Leslie, of the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification at the University of Dundee and a friend of the Reid family, said, “Susan was valued by colleagues and students across the University as a consummate professional and a loyal friend.”
Dr Ann Hodson, Programme Director for the BA (Hons) Social Work, added, “We are deeply grateful to Susan’s family for the donation they have made, which will have a hugely positive impact on our students for many years to come.”
