Seeing Double: The Colour Blind Test Series – Dundee Arts Café on 3rd February

The next Dundee Arts Café event will see graphic designer and artist David Lyons discuss his practice creating work intended to be experienced differently by colour blind and normally sighted people.

‘Seeing Double: The Colour Blind Test Series’ takes place at The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum on Tuesday, 3rd February.

David Lyons lectures on Media Design at the University of Abertay in Dundee, Scotland and is a PhD researcher at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD). His research focuses on the idea that artwork can be tailored to one’s visual abilities and his Colour Blind Test Prints communicate unique details to individuals with colour blindness while also containing imagery visible only to those with typical colour vision.

“My prints feature hidden visual messages to investigate the idea that artwork can be intentionally created to be experienced differently dependent on one’s visual abilities,” he said. “Both the colour blind and the typically sighted will be able to view all of the visual information contained in each print using smart device equipped with unique software.”

Prior to coming to Dundee, David Lyons designed exhibits for Charlie Brown and Peanuts and the Space Center Houston and taught graphic design at the University of Wisconsin Stout and The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He studied graphics at the University of Wisconsin Madison, and printmaking at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Loyola University Chicago.

Dundee Arts Café is a programme of talks showcasing arts research and developments taking place locally. The series is organised by the Universities of Dundee and Abertay, and Dundee City Council’s Leisure & Culture department.

Dundee Arts Café events enable members of the public to relax and discuss the arts, from English to History, Philosophy to Architecture, and Fine Art to Product Design, with some of the leading names carrying out work in these areas in Dundee.

The events last one hour, and speakers talk passionately about their work for 30 minutes before the floor is opened up to an informal discussion with the audience. All talks take place in The McManus Café, Albert Square, Dundee.

‘Seeing Double: The Colour Blind Test Series’ takes place at 6pm on Tuesday, 3rd February. The event is free, and open to all. Limited seating means visitors are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
