‘Rethinking what art is (and can be) in a digital age’ - Arts Café on 5th May

Dr Sarah Cook from the University of Dundee will next week explore how digital technology has brought about a revolution in art.

She will lead the next Dundee Arts Café event at The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum from 6pm on Tuesday, 5th May.

Dr Cook said, “Mobile devices, computer networks and new ways of accessing information and people across space and time, has led to a revolution in art – one which some museums have been reluctant to acknowledge.

“Artists have long experimented with new tools but ‘new media art’ has, over the last 30 years, embraced technologies such as the web, not just as a new tool, but a medium – a place to make and share art, often outside of the museum. Although museums are catching up with our new digital lives, artists are still forging ahead.”

Dr Cook is the curator of the programme at LifeSpace, Scotland’s first dedicated art-science gallery, located within the University’s Discovery Centre. She is also co-author of the book ‘Rethinking Curating: Art After New Media’ and has given invited presentations around the world on emerging art forms and curatorship.

Dundee Arts Café is a programme of talks showcasing arts research and developments taking place locally. The series is organised by the Universities of Dundee and Abertay, and Dundee City Council’s Leisure & Culture department.

These events enable members of the public to relax and discuss the arts, from English to History, Philosophy to Architecture, and Fine Art to Product Design, with some of the leading names carrying out work in these areas in Dundee. The events last one hour, and speakers talk passionately about their work for 30 minutes before the floor is opened up to an informal discussion with the audience.

‘Rethinking what art is (and can be) in a digital age’ takes place at The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum at 6pm on Tuesday, 5th May. The event is free and doors open at 5pm. Places are limited, so please arrive early to avoid disappointment.
