Exhibitors at this year’s Dundee Art, Design and Architecture Degree Show will have the chance to compete for a lucrative residency at the University of Dundee.
The Degree Show, which celebrates the success of graduating students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design and the department of Architecture, takes place from 22nd to 31st May. Up to 12 residencies are available for Art, Craft, Design and Media graduates from the past three years and the programme aims to bridge the gap between an undergraduate degree and a flourishing career in creative practice or industry.
Successful applicants will be provided with the support to develop their skills and confidence to build viable career pathways and/or business models to establish new routes to market. This year’s applicants will hope to emulate the success of 2014/15 residents Rosie Kimber, who has been selected to exhibit at SOFA Chicago, and Beth Spowart, who was chosen to show at One Year On in London. Both also received £1500 from the Dundee Visual Artists and Crafts Scheme to develop new work.
Dr Louise Valentine, Head of Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at Duncan of Jordanstone, said, “This residency provides the tools to cultivate and maximise the resident’s creative and entrepreneurial potential.”
“Winners receive the time, space and facilities to take creative risks and experiment as well as a tailored development programme, which nurtures both the creative capabilities and business capacities of the resident in equal parts.”
The residents will receive workspace within Duncan of Jordanstone and be able to access expertise, equipment, workshop facilities and other resources. Mentorship and networking opportunities will be provided, along with enhanced exposure and experience of various aspects of the creative industries.
An Open Studio event showcasing the work of this year's residents – Catherine Carson, Rosie Kimber, Jennifer Heilbronn, Kristen Neillie, Alana Peden, David Ramsay, Sheila Roussel and Beth Spowart – will run alongside the Degree Show. Situated on level two of the Crawford Building, it offers visitors the opportunity to speak to the 2014/15 residents and hear how they have developed their creative practice and business ideas through internships, awards and exhibitions.
