Public invited to Make:Shift:Do at Duncan of Jordanstone

Members of the public are invited to Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design next week to try their hand at new techniques used to create products in the design and craft industries.

The college, part of the University of Dundee, is the only Scottish satellite venue for Make:Shift:Do, a festival of innovation organised by the UK Crafts Council that takes place on Friday, 23rd October.

From open-source making and the rise of 3D printers, the UK is witnessing a boom in new making, fuelled by accessible new design technology and the spread of social media. Make:Shift:Do celebrates digital innovation in design and craft where venues invite the public to experience new forms of making. It's a chance to play, tinker, handle curious new materials and discover some of the places leading the field in digital making.

Visitors will have the chance to take part in a range of workshops demonstrating a range of creative techniques and technologies. These introductory sessions cost £4 each and are open to over-16s only.

‘Introduction to Smart Materials’ will explain how the likes of colour-changing pigments can be used to bring an interactive, responsive dimension to fabrics, papers and other materials while ‘Light Up!’ will show participants how to use optical fibres through weaving and other textile techniques. ‘Introduction to 3D Printing’ will see staff from Duncan of Jordanstone guide visitors through the process of creating and printing 3D models and ‘Creative Electronics: Bare Conductive’ will blend design and technology to allow participants to test out conductive paint to create graphical circuits and sensors.

“We are delighted to be the only Scottish venue for this year’s Make:Shift:Do festival,” said Joanna Bletcher, a postgraduate researcher at Duncan of Jordanstone and organiser of the Dundee event. “Making is at the heart of our teaching and research at DJCAD, and the festival is a great chance for people to learn more about how they can use these exciting materials and techniques.”

“This is the second year we have been involved with Make:Shift:Do. Last year we hosted a Salon event, an exhibition and hands-on workshops. Leading Scottish designers and researchers shared their processes, projects and experiences, and visitors had the chance to try out using smart materials, 3D printing, laser cutting and Arduino.”

“We are once again inviting people to come and join us for the day at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. Our four public workshops are designed to introduce participants to some of the basics of these materials and technologies, and let them explore their creative potential.

Thirty ‘make spaces’ across the UK will open their doors to the public for the 2015 Make:Shift Do. The event represents an opportunity for everyone in the UK to meet the next generation of makers and to try their hand at a new craft, from 3D printing to laser-cutting and CNC milling.

Make:Shift:Do, organised by the Crafts Council in partnership with the V&A, Institute of Making at UCL and Ultimaker aims to allow everyone the chance to experience these new technologies through a programme of workshops, events and activities.
