Nursing graduate Phelim Garrett-Hanna has been named this year’s winner of the University of Dundee’s Wimberley Award, given to the student who has made the most distinguished contribution to University life.
Phelim (21), who will graduate on Friday, has combined his academic endeavours with participation in all aspects of student life during his time at Dundee. During the first and second years of his degree course, Phelim was class representative, moving on to become class president in third year. He also volunteered for the University’s Nightline service throughout his time at Dundee, providing confidential support to his fellow students who needed help or simply someone to talk to.
Phelim, who went to school in Kirriemuir and now lives in Dundee, received the Award at this morning’s Graduation ceremony.
Since completing his studies he has found work as a staff nurse at the acute medical unit at Ninewells Hospital.
“I feel that it is important for students to make the most of their time at University and I didn’t feel I would be able to fulfil my full potential unless I got involved in things beyond just my field of study,” he said.
“For me, that meant helping people, which is why I got involved as a class rep so I could help my classmates make the most of their time here. I also saw the chance to improve things and that is why I ran for class president. Similarly, there were times when I needed help and that was why I got involved at Nightline so that if anyone was feeling like I was, they could be sure of having someone to talk to.
“I didn’t expect to get an award at the end of it but obviously I am delighted to be recognised with this year’s Wimberley Award. This is a great honour and makes my graduation even more of a special occasion.”
