‘People & Place’ – 11th annual Culture Day

The River Tay, Highland Clearances, Claude Monet, interior design and Minecraft are among the subjects that will be explored at the University of Dundee’s 11th annual Culture Day next week.

Students, staff and members of the public will be treated to a fascinating interdisciplinary programme of talks and drama at the Baxter Conference Room 1.36 on Wednesday, 18th November when artists, scientists, historians and other speakers examine this year’s theme of ‘People & Place’.

Organised by the University’s Culture and Arts Forum, the Culture Day has proved popular with a wide audience over the past decade. The event features a series of 15-minute presentations and performances from members of the Forum and is intended to showcase a range of subjects relating to the theme.

Eleven short lectures are planned to take place, including one focusing on Mary Shelley’s Dundee as part of a series of events celebrating her links to the city where she lived for several years. The JOOT Theatre Company close the day with a performance of Old English Elegies.

Organiser Caroline Brown said, “This year’s Culture Day will be examining how people and places are inextricably linked but how the notion of place varies depending on the perspective of the person and cultural norms.

“Our Forum members will be approaching the subject from different directions and demonstrating how the bond between people and place is important in their discipline, whether that’s Geography, Theatre Studies, design, history, psychology or any other.”

The Culture & Arts Forum is an informal network which aims to support and promote the various departments within the University involved in cultural activity.

‘People & Place’ takes place from 1.30pm-5.25pm on Wednesday, 18th November, As always, admission is free and visitors are welcome to attend as much or as little of the programme as they like.
