‘Patient Safety: How Do We Train Our Doctors?’ – Café Science event on 23rd February
Published On Mon 16 Feb 2015 by Grant Hill
One of the country’s foremost authorities on medical education will discuss the challenges of training doctors to ensure the safety of patients at the next Café Science event in Dundee.
Jean Ker is Professor in Medical Education at the University of Dundee and Associate Dean of Innovation for the College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing. She will deliver a talk entitled ‘Patient safety: how do we train our doctors?’ at Avery & Co on Monday, 23rd February.
Professor Ker said, “With the increasing pressures on public services, ensuring that patients are cared for in a safe system is a challenge for everyone involved. In this talk, I will explore some of the very real dilemmas individual health care professionals face in their everyday practice, trying to make sure each person gets the right care at the right time and in the right manner every time no matter where they live.”
Professor Ker founded the Scottish Clinical Skills Network in 2000 and has won several awards for her innovative approach to teaching and ensuring safe educational standards of skills practice across the healthcare professions.
She has worked in medical education and primary care development in Bangladesh, Moldova and Latvia on behalf of the World Health Organisation and British Council and is currently involved in developing a transformational model of health care for chronic diseases in Kuwait. Professor Ker introduced patient safety tools to the undergraduate medical curriculum at Dundee and developed the Dow Clinical Simulation Suite to enhance transfer of skills.
Café Science was launched in January 2008, and has attracted over 6000 visitors since then. The monthly events are informal discussions led by leading local researchers that allow members of the public the opportunity to learn more about the ground-breaking science at the Universities of Dundee, St Andrews and Abertay, the James Hutton Institute, and Dundee Science Centre.
‘Patient safety: how do we train our doctors?’ takes place at Avery & Co, South Tay Street, at 7pm on Monday, 23rd February. The event is free and open to all. There is no need to book in advance but an early arrival is recommended.
