Graphic Design student receives cheque for Angus Open Studios competition win

A student from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) has won a competition to design marketing material for the Angus Open Studio Event 2015.

Ruth Niven, a final-year Graphic Design student, received a cheque for £200 from representatives of Angus Open Studios (AOS), an association of artists, craftsmen, and designer-makers in and around Angus. Their showcase event takes place each May, when local artists and craftsmen open their studios to the public.

The venture is designed to put members on the creative map in Scotland, and the AOS team approached Graphic Design staff at DJCAD with the aim of bringing some contemporary design practice into the marketing collateral for this year’s event.

Ruth beat off competition from her classmates to win the competition to design the brochure and other marketing material for the Angus Open Studio Event 2015 with work that underlined the concept of being open for business’.

She said, “Being a part of the Angus Open Studios project had been a great experience, and to actually be rewarded with this prize was an extra bonus. Working with the company has been a great opportunity and I look forward to future collaborations.”

Course Director Gary Gowans said, “We were very pleased to work with the AOS team, as the project offered a ‘real world’ challenge for our students. We are committed to producing highly employable graduates – regular exposure to live work and client liaison is key to this process.”

AOS Chairperson Issy Valentine praised the inning entry, saying, “We chose Ruth as the worthy winner of our £200 prize as her design delivers great clarity, and the inside layout is exceptional.”
