Fulbright students arrive to explore Scotland’s identity, culture and innovation

From William Wallace and Macbeth to a modern powerhouse for science and innovation, the story of Scotland’s history and its place in the world will be explored through the prestigious Fulbright-Scotland Summer Institute 2015.

Ten American undergraduates have arrived in Scotland for the 2015 Summer Institute. Now in its third year, the Institute is a unique partnership between the University of Dundee, University of Strathclyde and the US-UK Fulbright Commission with support from The Scottish Government and civic partners.

The students from across the United States will spend five weeks (5th July-8th August) in Scotland for a packed programme of lectures, seminars and study visits on the theme Scotland: Identity, Culture and Innovation.

They will meet academic, political and cultural leaders over the course of their stay, exploring Scotland’s place in the modern world and how it came to its current position.

One of the Institute organisers, Professor Graeme Morton, Chair of Modern History at the University of Dundee, said, “We are greatly looking forward to welcoming our 2015 Fulbrighters to Scotland. They will learn about science, entrepreneurship, Scottish history, literature and much more besides. The stress is on Scotland’s rich vein of innovation – of ideas and discoveries that have changed the world and ideas that might yet impact on our future.”

Dr John R Young, Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Strathclyde, added, “Strathclyde has focused on innovation throughout its existence since its origins more than 200 years ago. This spirit of progress is central to an understanding of Scottish culture and identity.

“Innovation is central to Scotland's character and is bound up with the nation's culture and identity. We explore all of these themes at Strathclyde today and will be extending a warm welcome to this year's Fulbright students, as we help to enhance their knowledge of Scotland's past and present.”

The Fulbright Program is the flagship educational and cultural exchange programme of the US Department of State which promotes mutual understanding between the people of the USA and more than 155 countries.
