Dundee students among `leading creative thinkers’ at Undergraduate Awards

Students from across the University of Dundee have been highly commended and listed among the `leading creative thinkers’ in the annual Undergraduate Awards.

Eight students from Dundee – representing disciplines across the University - have been shortlisted for the awards, with winners announced at the UA Global Summit in Dublin in November.

They are (categories in brackets):

  • Alexandru Iliescu and Rachael Delaney (Law)
  • Marianne White (Nursing & Midwifery)
  • Matei Agavriloaei (Life Sciences)
  • Fraser Logan and Thalea Turowski  (Politics & International Relations)
  • Kerry Quinn (Education)
  • Megan Falconer (Visual Arts & Design)

This year’s awards attracted 5,117 submissions from students in 255 universities across 39 countries. Those who are highly commended are in the top 10 per cent of all entries and now have a chance to go on to become one of 50 winners.

“We are absolutely delighted to be listed as highly commended – Alex and I are the only Law students in Scotland who have made it this far so it really feels special,” said Rachael Delaney.

Alex Iliescu, who originally gained admission to the University through the Access Summer School, said, “One of the great things about being at University here at Dundee is that you are constantly encouraged to get involved with things like this and look beyond just your academic track.”

Professor Karl Leydecker, Vice-Principal (Learning & Teaching) at the University, said, “This is a fantastic achievement by our students. The Undergraduate Awards are fiercely contested among students at highly prestigious universities from around the world so it is a great reflection of the quality of our students here at Dundee that we are so well represented.”

Cited as the ultimate champion for the highest performing undergraduates, the Undergraduate Awards is the world’s only pan-discipline academic awards programme that identifies leading creative thinkers through their undergraduate coursework.

As well as inviting shortlisted students to Dublin, where the winners will receive their medals, UA provides top performing students with the support, network and opportunities they require to raise their profiles and further their career paths.

Winners are published in the annual academic Undergraduate Journal, as well as being invited to the UA Global Summit in Dublin. Winners and Highly Commended students also gain access to the UA Alumni Network.

The University of Dundee is an Affiliate Member of the Undergraduate Awards.
