Dundee helps France’s `red red rose’ exhibition to flower

The University of Dundee is the principal lender to a major exhibition of Scottish art being staged in Montbéliard in the east of France.

“My Love is like a red red rose”explores three centuries of Art in Scotland and opens tomorrow, Saturday November 21st, at the Musée du château des ducs de Wurtemberg. The exhibition coincides with Scotland being the guest nation at the Montbéliard Christmas Market this winter.

Approximately 100 loans have been brought together from public and private collections across Scotland, England and France. Eleven of these are from the University of Dundee’s exceptional fine art collections, including paintings by Charlotte Nasmyth, Noel Paton and John Duncan and prints by Eduardo Paolozzi.

Most notable is Sir Henry Raeburn’s full-length portrait of James Duff, 4th Earl of Fife, which is being used as the main publicity image for the exhibition. Purchased by the University (then Queen’s College, Dundee) in 1964 using money from a private bequest,  the painting normally hangs in University House, and has not left Dundee since 1999, when it was lent to the City Art centre in Edinburgh.

Curator Matthew Jarron said “We’re delighted to be lending so many works to this prestigious exhibition, which demonstrates the importance of our collection of Scottish art. Projects like this are one of the ways that Museum Services can help promote the University internationally.”

The exhibition runs until 28 February 2016.
