Dundee a winner in Herald Higher Education Awards

The University of Dundee was last night named the winner of the Innovation Technology Excellence Award at the inaugural Herald Higher Education Awards at a glittering ceremony in Glasgow.

Dundee picked up the award for a project in the School of Medicine which has that enables undergraduate students to complete coursework using their own mobile devices and tablets in the classroom, an approach that has not only transformed the way that students learn, but also enhanced the way that teachers teach.

Dr Shihab Khogali, a Senior Lecturer in Medical Education who was academic lead on the project, said, “This is fantastic news for the team who have developed this technology. In an age when students are increasingly bringing their own laptops, tablets and smartphones to campus for note-taking and personal study, a system that was compatible with these devices seemed an appropriate approach.

“We set out to create a system that allows students to work on their own mobile devices and gives opportunity for instant assessment and feedback. This has proved to work very well for both students and staff. It is great to see it recognised in the Herald awards.”

The project is part of the School of Medicine’s strategy to take advantage of technology to enhance student learning.

Jason Miles-Campbell, from Jisc Scotland and Jisc Northern Ireland, who sponsored the award, said, “The team at Dundee has grasped digital opportunity, giving us an excellent example of how innovative practice can make a real difference to students who might otherwise be excluded.”
