Sixteen of the students who wowed visitors to this year’s record-breaking University of Dundee Art, Design and Architecture Degree Show have been selected for the prestigious 2016 Royal Scottish Academy New Contemporaries.
The students from the Architecture, Art, Philosophy and Contemporary Practices, Fine Art and Time Based Art & Digital Film programmes will exhibit alongside graduates from the other main colleges of art in Scotland. They are among the dozens of students from the University’s School of Architecture and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design who won prizes for the work they displayed at the Degree Show.
This year’s Degree Show reached new highs by attracting more than 14,500 visitors over its run, including over 5500 people on the opening night. The show was also viewed by people in more than 20 countries around the world via live streaming of events online.
“We enjoyed an absolutely fantastic Degree Show this year and it is no surprise that so many of our exhibiting students have caught the eye of visiting judges and won awards,” said Professor Paul Harris, Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design. “We had unprecedented numbers of visitors, including hundreds of school pupils from across Scotland, and their feedback was extremely positive.
“Degree Show is firmly established as a major event in the city’s calendar and highlights the flow of bright, creative talent through Dundee. It is an inspiring event and I expect the class of 2015 to go on to achieve great things in their careers.”
New Contemporaries is regarded as the most prestigious showcase for young artists in Scotland and this year’s exhibition will take place at the RSA Galleries on The Mound next Spring. With nearly £40,000 worth of monetary prizes in addition to residency, studio and purchase prizes, the exhibition is an important initiative that offers a unique opportunity to see the best of Scotland’s emerging talent under one roof.
The artists selected for New Contemporaries are: James Basey (Architecture) David Mackay and Fiona McKinnon (both APCP), Robbie Gray, Michael Hunter, and Sarah Smart (all TBADF), Amanda Adam, Amy Bertram, Allyson Fraser, Koren Heydon-Dumbleton, Lucie Williams, Corey Reid, Bobby Sinclair, Struan Teague, Joletta Thorburn, and Guy Titterington (all Fine Art).
