Creative writing celebrated at double launch

Dundee’s burgeoning literary scene will celebrate its latest successes tonight when a double book launch takes place.

The eighth edition of New Writing Dundee and the seventh issue of Dundee Writes will be launched at Drouthys, Perth Road, Dundee at 5.30pm.

New Writing Dundee 8 features an entertaining mix of poetry and prose from new and established authors, while Dundee Writes includes work by staff, students and graduates of the University.

Included in the 30 contributions in New Writing Dundee 8 are poems by Dundee’s Makar W.N. Herbert, stories from novelist Kevin MacNeil and New Zealand author Paula Morris, lyrical essays by Elizabeth Reeder and an interview with man Booker judge Stuart Kelly.

New voices, both local and international, also feature strongly, drawing their inspiration from a range of sources including the landscape, relationships, the Law, rain, punk, ceilidhs and folklore.

The new publication is edited by Peggy Hughes, Literary Development Officer with the University’s Literary Dundee initiative in collaboration with Professor Kirsty Gunn and Jim Stewart of the MLitt in Writing Practice and Study.

Peggy said, “We are delighted to be launching the latest edition of New Writing Dundee and showcasing the work of some fabulous writers across different genres. Tonight’s joint launch also allows us to mark the publication of the newest Dundee Writes and celebrate the fantastic writing talent this city possesses.”

New Writing Dundee 8 can be bought from the Literary Dundee website at a cost of £4. For more information visit http://www.dundee.ac.uk/literarydundee.

Dundee Writes is edited by Lindsay MacGregor and Josie Jules Andrews, and features around 12 pieces of poetry and prose selected from around 80 submissions. This new edition contains pieces about Isbister chambered cairn on Orkney and fish sex in Finland.

Published twice a year Dundee Writes is sent to major libraries, including the Scottish Poetry Library, and to literary agents across the UK.
