Animation students make their `speed pitch’

Their predecessors are already bringing magic to our screens in film, television, computer games and online. Now the 2015 class of animation graduates from the University of Dundee are set to show off their talents at the Art, Design & Architecture Degree Show and with a `speed pitch’.

Animation alumni now working for companies such as STV, MPC, London and Brown Bag Films, Dublin, and across the media will visit Degree Show and then take part in a `speed pitch’ session with the new graduates on Saturday May 23rd.

“Our alumni are working in prime positions for some of the biggest names in film, TV and games,” said Sharon Campbell, Course Director of the Animation programme at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, part of the University of Dundee.

“That is testament to the quality of our course here at Dundee and to the focus we place on developing students who can contribute to industry from the moment they graduate. They are specialists in everything from 3D modelling to background art, character design to storyboarding, as well as character animation and VFX, who already have experience of working in teams to produce great work.”

More than 20 students are graduating from Animation this year. They will get an immediate chance to show off their work to industry professionals with the `speed pitch’ event at Dundee University Students’ Association on Saturday May 23rd, starting from 3pm.

“I am delighted to welcome back our alumni, who are maintaining their links to Dundee and giving valuable advice and opinion to our new graduates,” said Sharon.

“This is a great opportunity for the students to `pitch’ their showreels and portfolios, and to start networking with animation industry professionals.”

Student Lauren Bulter, who has specialised in storyboarding and character animation, said the career prospects were one of the reasons she had been attracted to study animation at Duncan of Jordanstone.

“When I was reading about this course before I started University I was really impressed by the number of jobs that could be open to me if I got a degree,” said Lauren. “It is great for all the graduating students to get the chance to present their work to people working in the industry.”

Daniel Popa, who has focused on concept art and character design, said he was sure the industry representatives would be impressed by the students’ work.

“We have our finished showreels and portfolios for Degree Show and they are looking really good,” said Daniel.

The public can see that work for themselves throughout the Art, Design & Architecture Degree Show 2015, which opens this weekend in the Crawford and Matthew Building of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design.

The traditional Preview Evening for the students, their families and guests takes tonight, Friday, 22nd May. The Degree Show then opens to the public tomorrow and remains open until Sunday, 31st May.

Admission is free and the exhibition is open from 10am until 8pm (Monday – Friday) and 10am to 4pm (Saturday – Sunday).
