Across Loch Rannoch in a self-built boat
Published On Tue 19 May 2015 by Roddy Isles
A University of Dundee student’s epic journey down Loch Rannoch in a self-built boat and then to the summit of Schiehallion is captured at this year’s Dundee Art, Design and Architecture Degree Show.
Tanith Marron (21), from Eskdalemuir in Dumfries & Galloway, made the trip in March this year as part of the project for her Fine Art degree, capturing stunning imagery and leaving a trail of paper boats all the way to the top of Schiehallion.
She crossed Loch Rannoch in her self-built bright green kayak, made from corrugated plastic.
“My work is concerned with being immersed in the natural landscape so I decided to focus my degree show on a journey from Rannoch Moor to Schiehallion Munro,” said Tanith. “I didn't just want to walk and I didn’t just want to stand on the banks of the loch so I built a kayak.
“I thought it would be a wonderful way to travel, and I wouldn't miss anything because I would be on the inside looking out.”
Tanith is used to spending time in Scotland’s remote areas. During the first semester of her final year at she had a residency with The Bothy Project.
“I spent a full week in Inshriach Bothy with no electricity, no phone signal, the only running water was rain water and I was 10 minutes walk to the closest farm and 5 miles from the closest town,” said Tanith.
“Being so completely separate from the day to day really motivates artwork. It was a unique experience, and one that I will treasure.”
The day after Degree Show finishes Tanith is off to the Faroe Islands for another adventure, working with the Clipperton Project, which organises research and education programmes, expeditions and exhibitions all around the world.
Tanith’s work is exhibited as part of the University of Dundee’s Art, Design & Architecture Degree show, which celebrates the success of our graduating students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design and the department of Architecture, within the School of the Environment.
For 10 days from May 21st the Matthew and Crawford buildings at the University transform themselves into one of the country’s biggest galleries showcasing the culmination of several years of creative development and hard work.
