Voluntary organisations for refugees resist pressure to operate as 'shadow state' agencies |
New research funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, highlights the tensions that face voluntary organizations between working to support refuges arriving in Britain and the rules surrounding government funding for their work. According to Professor Nick Fyfe at Dundee University who led the project voluntary groups feel they are under considerable pressure because what is in the best interests of their clients conflicts with government policy.

NC3R prize to Dundee Scientists working on Neglected Tropical Diseases |
Scientists working on new drug treatments for leishmaniasis have won this year’s NC3R prize for reducing animal suffering in research. The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3R) awarded the prize to Professor Fairlamb and his colleague Dr Susan Wyllie for their refinement of techniques used to propagate leishmania parasites in hamsters.

New DVI contract awarded to the University |
The Unit of Anatomy and Forensic Anthropology within the University of Dundee’s College of Life Sciences has tendered successfully to be awarded a substantial contract to train police officers from all over the UK to form part of the new UK Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) response capability. These officers will be deployed to help identify victims of mass fatalities anywhere in the world. UK DVI is a joint initiative between the Home Office and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the UK government.
