come back!
Universities are as proud of their alumni as parents are of their offspring and
at least as glad to see or hear from them. Which is why this year we hope you
will return to see us, to revisit old haunts, to remember old- and not so old -
friends, to see how things have changed or remained the same and to share
some of the happiest moments in the university calendar.
Graduations are such celebratory occasions that we have extended ours over
several days this year (11-13 July) to include a series of events - some geared
specifically to you, our alumni - making the most of the campus and the city.
The Discovery Lecture, this year to be delivered by leading contemporary artist
and alumnus David Mach, has moved from its customary April date to become
a part of the July celebrations, along with the Graduates' Council AGM. This
means that students could graduate on the Thursday or Friday and attend their
first Graduates' Council meeting on the Saturday!
Historic campus tours, open lectures, concerts and a combined staff and
alumni party are among the treats in store to ensure that you enjoy the
celebrations. Visitors will be given a warm welcome at Sensation, DCA,
Discovery Point and Verdant Works.
It is my pleasure to invite you to "Graduation Sensation" - the university's first
festival of events designed to celebrate graduation, build a life-long link
between you and your university and welcome your family and friends to
Dundee to celebrate with us. Our graduation team has been working for over
a year with the City Council and many other organisations to plan this festival,
both on campus and in a tented village flanked by the Sensation Science Centre
and Dundee Contemporary Arts.
This year we have made the university's annual review fully electronic, in
common with many of our publications. To view the annual review visit
www.dundee.ac.uk/pressoffice/.
In early July we will be launching our strategy for
the future development of the university which we hope will be a talking point
with you, as graduates.
Whether you graduated last year or thirty years ago I am confident that you will
enjoy this exciting long weekend. And when you do leave, please talk about the
university and the city. Tell others what you have found here, either during your
studies or as a visitor. Most importantly, remember that as part of our family of
50,000 graduates all over the world, you will always be welcomed back to the
city and the University of Dundee.
