Celebrating the Dundee/India connection
Following the widespread enthusiasm and interest in the 'Dundee and India - roots, rivalry and
interdependence’ exhibition and lecture held in February, Archive Services are holding a one day
event to bring together individuals who have connections with India.
The exhibition will be on display again - for one day only - and Professor Chris Whatley will
repeat his lecture on the subject of Dundee's textile connection with India. This event will
provide an opportunity for discussion on the Dundee/Indian experience, which, with participants'
permission, will be recorded to launch a Dundee and India oral history archive.
Head of Archive, Records Management & Museum Services Pat Whatley said, "People came from miles
around to see this exhibition - many of whom had lived and worked in India in the jute industry.
Some visitors renewed old friendships and others were able to point out the houses where they had
lived as children!"
The exhibition consists of items from the University's extensive jute and linen collections
which have been consulted by historians throughout the world.
The event will be held on the 7 June, from 3-7 pm in the Baxter Conference Suite, 1st Floor,
Tower Building. Refreshments will be available during the event. The lecture will take place at
6pm. All welcome.
