Clutch of medals for student athletes
University sportsmen and women have been building on last year's success in the British
Universities Sports Association league, clinching medals at the Youth Commonwealth Games and the
BUSA boxing championships.
First year law student Jenni Kilgallon and second year medical student Morag MacLarty travelled to
Australia for the Youth Commonwealth Games. Jenni picked up a silver medal in the 50m freestyle
swimming event, another silver in the 100m freestyle, bronze in the 100m medley, and a third silver
in the 100m freestyle relay. Earmarked as one of Scotland's and the UK's prospects for future
Olympic, World and Commonwealth Championships, Jenni has just returned from a three week altitude
training camp in Mexico with the Scottish High Performance Squad.
Morag won gold in the 1500m race and silver in the distance medley relay. She has also been
identified as one of Scotland and the UK's most talented middle distance runners and is supported
by the Central Institute of Sport. Morag's talent was recognised with an invitation to attend the
Kelly Holmes talent camp in South Africa.
University boxing club competitors also achieved an impressive result at the BUSA boxing event,
hosted by the University for the first time. Jade Searl was awarded the first ever BUSA Best Female
Boxer award, as well as picking up the gold in her final match. Tham Shezi scooped gold at
welterweight and a silver medal went to Mark Ashworth at super heavyweight.
Sports Union President Andrew Renwick said, "The team trained extensively for the British
championships and our hard work has paid off. It was an honour to welcome visitors from 30
universities across the UK to our city."
