Experts analyse art in Dundee
A conference on art in Dundee c 1900 was hosted by the University as part of the events
programme for the exhibition The Artist & the Thinker, jointly organised by McManus Galleries and
Museum Services.
The conference was organised by University museum curator Matthew Jarron and attracted a full house
of 100 delegates. Speakers included University staff Professor Murdo Macdonald, who spoke about
John Duncan; Richard Carr, who addressed the development of DJACD; and Elaine Shemilt, who spoke
on science and art. Other speakers included Nicola Ireland of the Royal Scottish Academy and Clara
Young of McManus Galleries, as well as a number of PhD students, including Megan Ferguson who
discussed some of Duncan’s links with Patrick Geddes.
To accompany the event, Matthew staged a display in the Baxter Conference Suite foyer of Dundee
artists from that period, which included highlights from a recent gift of sketches by David Foggie,
donated by one of the artist's grandchildren following the success of last year's Foggie
exhibition.
