Name change for CALS
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has grown from eight to nine departments, having been
joined by the Centre for Applied Language Studies (CALS). Previously known as the Centre for
Applied Language Studies, the centre has been re-named the School of Applied Linguistic and
Language Studies (SALLS). The re-name followed a major review, carried out by new director Dr
Glenn Fulcher.
Glenn explains, "The new school has a number of goals within the University, including the
provision of language and intercultural learning opportunities for all students and within the
community. International students will also be supported through quality programmes both before
and after entry to the University. We will also be offering a wide range of postgraduate
programmes."
As its academic role grows the school is increasingly attracting visiting academics from other
parts of the world. In the last six months SALLS has hosted Professor Fred Davidson from the
University of Illinois and Professor Merrill Swain from the University of Toronto, both of whom
gave open lectures that attracted an audience from across the country.
