Staff involved with the Women, Culture and Society postgraduate programme have just returned
from Holland where they were establishing a research programme into the production of gendered
identity in text and image.
Three conferences will be held, one of which will take place in Dundee during 2007, the
University's 40th anniversary year.
Rachel says, "Given the gender theme of the conference, the link between Groningen and Dundee is
particularly fortuitous. Both institutions are associated with powerful and pioneering women. In
Dundee, Mary Ann Baxter founded University College in 1881 with an explicit requirement that women
were to be admitted on equal terms to men. In Groningen, Alleta H Jakobs was the first woman to be
awarded a doctorate in medical science in Holland, in 1879."
Due to the focus on gender in text and image, the collaboration with Groningen will also involve
Keith Williams and Chris Murray from the English Department. As key members of the Scottish Word
and Image Group (SWIG), Chris and Keith will join forces with the 'Women, Culture and Society'
team to organise the 2007 Dundee conference.
