Lab commemorates Ian Durajczyk
A newly refurbished laboratory for first and second year students in the Division of Electronic
Engineering and Physics has been officially named after Ian Durajczyk who died suddenly last year.
Ian had worked in the Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences since 1980.
A large gathering of friends, colleagues and members of Ian's family attended an official opening
ceremony, at which his wife Jackie unveiled a plaque which had been created by Andy Gibson, and
colleagues in Estates and Buildings with help from the division of mechanical engineering and
mechatronics, and a number other departments in the University.
Professor Sandy Fitzgerald of the Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences said, "As part of the
refurbishment of the Harris building, Ian designed a completely new 1st and 2nd year laboratory.
Sadly he died before the work on the lab was completed, but it was named in his honour. He was a
colleague for whom we all had great affection and respect."
The plaque was created out of recycled materials which had been found around the University.
Sandy explained, "Andy Gibson used old bits of wood and brass to create the plaque for the lab.
We all felt that this was something Ian would have approved of as he was always finding a use for
odds and ends that were being thrown out around the University."
