Calling all aspiring staff artists
The Exhibitions Department has a wealth of new shows coming up this semester across all six gallery
spaces, including the revival of an 'Open exhibition' for all staff.
The Open Exhibition was established by retired University Professor John Berridge, now President of
Dundee Art Society. By returning it to the exhibitions programme, the department is providing an
opportunity for any aspiring artists amongst the 'non-art' staff to show off their talent.
Up to three pieces of work can be submitted to the show, which will be held in the Lamb Gallery between
29 January and 26 February 2005. If you would like to contribute please register your interest by
contacting exhibitions@dundee.ac.uk or phone 01382 345330, by November 22.
Amongst the current exhibitions is 'Life of a Commercial Gallery', which is running in the Cooper Gallery
until 27 November. For this show the Gallery is hosting IBID Projects, a young organisation with a
gallery in London and a second gallery in Vilnius, Lithuania. The idea behind the exhibition is to
explore the role of a commercial gallery through the 'case-study' of IBID Projects, looking at how they
operate, the current art market and the artists they represent.
'PhD - Research in Progress' is an exhibition currently running in the Lamb Gallery. It provides a window
into the specialist areas of research of PhD students from DJCAD. The students involved are Valerie Carr,
Paul Harrison, Marlene Ivey, John McGhee, Sandra Wilson, Sandra McNeil, Barbara Meighan, Jenny Millar,
Holger Mohaupt, Ruth Pelzer-Montada, Chris Rowland, Nuno Sacramento and Aileen Stackhouse. The show runs
until 12 November.
Also showing in the Lower Foyer Gallery until 11 November is 'Portfolio Exhibition', a great opportunity
to view portfolio work from this year's DJCAD General Course students. Plus, look out for an exhibition
in the Lamb Gallery between 19 November and 16 December, which explores the various applications provided
by the University's Satellite Receiving Station.
The Exhibitions Department's recent discparc festival proved to be a great success, with over 1500 people
attending events and exhibitions over the 10 day period.
'Discparc' is the University's first music and audio art label, set up by the Exhibitions Department in
2003. Festival events included a set from Glasgow based band 'Son of Kong'; the successful launch night
of discparc's second release DP002, with DJ sets by DJCAD alumni Mark Wallace, Florian Grassl, Graeme
Martin and Steve Murray; and an entertaining and informative talk by A&R man Ronnie Gurr about his career
in the music industry.
