trophy
Jane Wallace, Specialist Registrar in Ophthalmology, was awarded the "Foulds Trophy" at the Royal College
of Ophthalmologists Annual Congress in Manchester for her research paper on 'Endoscopic probing for
congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction'.
This trophy is presented for the best paper delivered by an ophthalmologist in training. This is the
fourth National or International award for this work being done in the Departments of Ophthalmology and
Otolaryngology on congenital naso-lacrimal duct obstruction.
fundraising
Office staff in the Department of Law recently hosted a fundraising lunch. £150 was raised to send to
help the children of Beslan recover from the recent terrorist atrocities.

Student volunteers are now being recruited for the second cohort of 'Peer Connections', a Student
Services initiative that brings students together in mentoring and befriending roles. Training starts in

visitors
The University hosted a visit by a group of staff from Finnish Universities. The group from Finland are
visiting Scottish Universities and Agencies to explore quality systems of higher education in Scotland.
An overview of the University's quality systems and quality assurance, and enhancement of taught
provision was provided by Alan Davidson. Information on quality assurance of Research Degree programmes
was provided by Professor Alan Dobson.

Three fourth year student primary teachers and a second year DJCAD graphic design student have raised
£1925 for the McMillan cancer research campaign and Carpathian Aid in Romania by walking the West
highland way.

Professor Waelde of CEPMLP recently acted as the Director of Studies for the research seminar Academy of
International Law at the Peace Palace. The Academy's research seminar brought together 25
fellowship-funded promising young scholars in the field of international investment law.
Hague Academy appointments are among the most coveted honorific appointments in the field of
international law.
mentors
A scheme launched by Nature and NESTA (the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts) is
aiming to recognise outstanding achievement in scientific mentoring and the fostering of scientific
creativity with two new awards.
Candidates may be from any natural sciences discipline. Of the two awards, the first is for £7,000 and
recognises lifetime achievement. The second, of £5,000, will go to a scientist in mid career.
Researchers can nominate themselves or be recommended by colleagues and ex-colleagues and each candidate
must include independent testimonials from five researchers who have been mentored by their nominee.
