The secret lives of librarians
by Wendy Gilham-Skinner
The University Library's exhibition space has undergone a transformation and currently houses artwork
produced by the library staff.
The Exhibition, entitled 'The Secret Life of Librarians', centres around the paintings of Elspeth Collier
who studied at DJCAD and is currently completing an Art History degree with the Open University. In 2001
Elspeth was a contestant on the Channel 4 programme 'Watercolour Challenge'.
This was followed by an exhibition of the paintings at the Mall Galleries in London. Her work is held in
private collections in Australia, USA, Cyprus and the UK.
Of the nudes, flora and still lifes presently on show Elspeth says, "I enjoy working with a variety of
media, watercolour, acrylic, pastels, monoprint and collage. I am particularly interested in portraying
colour and light and my main aim is to produce images that evoke an atmosphere of joy, warmth and calm."
The Main Library is open 9am until midnight Monday to Friday, 12 until 5pm on Saturdays and 12 until 7pm
on Sundays.
