Conference success for Department of Law
The Socio-Legal Studies Association conference is a major annual event attracting legal academics from
around the world. This year twelve papers were presented by staff and a postgraduate student of the
University's Law Department. This significant contribution to the conference is an indication of the
Department’s current ability to foster research output of international standing.
The Department's strengths were well represented at the conference, with papers presented by Yiannos Tolias,
Silvere Lefevre, Andrea Ross, Aylwin Pillai, David Cabrelli, Mary Ford, Robin White, Stuart Cross and Alice
Belcher.
In the postgraduate stream, one of Professor Belcher's PhD students, Hasani Mohd Ali, presented a paper, and
the conference was also attended by two further PhD students registered in the Law Department.
Fiona Raitt, currently on research leave following three years as Head of Department also presented a paper
entitled "Is the children's rights movement a feminist issue?"
A paper was also given by Ann Wardrop who was visiting the department from La Trobe University in Victoria,
Australia.
Alice Belcher, Head of the Department of Law, said, "The conference was an undoubted triumph for the Law
Department, with many positive comments being received on the strengths of individual papers and the
