botanics
The Botanic Garden recently opened its gates for a family fun day, giving visitors of all ages a chance to take part in a range of fun activities. A 'Pot a Plant' event, story telling in a 'jungle' tunnel, face painting and ‘wacky workshops’ were some of the highlights of the children’s programme. Botanics staff were also on hand to provide advice about plants for the adults who came along. The next event is on 11 September and is entitled 'Saturday’s world of wood'.

health
Dr Anita Asiimwe, a recipient of one of the Rwandan University Scholarships who is studying Public Health at Dundee, recently spoke at the Rotary International Assembly in Birmingham, which is attended by the Senior Leaders of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland. Rotary International will assist with the administration of the RUSS programme in future years.

The first architecture student to receive a PhD was in fact Mahmood Attieh, not Warat Lacharoje as was published in the last issue of Contact.

rotary
The Dundee Rotary Club recently invited six international students to represent the University at their annual lunch. Xiaoyan Xue (Angela) was one of the students who attended and gave a brief talk on the cultural experience of coming to study in Dundee.

football
The staff team from the Health Informatics Centre has won the Champions League Football Tournament run by the Institute. After eight group stages involving nearly forty teams from all seven faculties and staff, HIC Utd overcame the team representing Law and Accountancy 3 - 1 in the final. The Player of the Tournament award went to HIC Utd captain, Steve McGillivary.

quiz
The annual planning student quiz was recently held at the University. Teams were drawn from planning schools in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland but it was a team from the University’s School of Town and Regional planning that was declared the winner. The team was made up of final year students James Masini, Kelly McMann, Fraser James and Andrew Trigger who were awarded the first prize of £500 by representatives of the quiz sponsors: Planning Magazine and RPS Consultants.

engineering
Dr Qi Zhao and Professor Eric Abel from the Division of Engineering have been awarded a grant of £450,000 by the Department of Health for engineering and concerns methods of improving surgical instruments to reduce the risks of contamination. The Division has also just opened a new research laboratory.

symposium
Professor Chris Whatley, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, recently attended a symposium for the Scottish Executive, held at Edinburgh Castle. Chris was one of four leading Scottish historians to attend. He presented a session entitled Understanding Scotland's History, about the causes and consequences of the Act of Union of 1707 and its current significance in Scottish society.
