Prize for healthy catering
The catering team at the Faculty of Education and Social Work has recently won the Scottish Healthy Choice
Award from the Scottish Consumer Board - making them the first caterers in Tayside and one of only a handful
of universities in Scotland to receive this accolade.
Catering manager Kevin Megaw MBE said, "We provide a good range of vegetable based and low fat dishes
ensuring that we use fresh ingredients and plenty of rice, pulses and fruit. We find that healthy and
nutritious lunches are very popular with the staff and students here at the Faculty of Education and Social
Work. It is important that our trainee teachers experience healthy options so they can pass on these habits
to the next generation, improving Scotland's health."
Claire Brown, National Co-ordinator of the Scottish healthy choice awards scheme and Rosemary Davidson, the
Tayside Co-ordinator for the Scottish Healthy Choice award, attended the presentation.
The award was presented by University nutritionist Wendy Wrieden, on behalf of the Scottish Consumer Board.
Wendy said, "It is essential that canteens provide healthy choices for their customers so people can make
healthy eating choices at work as well as at home. It is particularly important that educational
establishments 'practise what they preach.'
Hopefully other establishments will be inspired by the team at the Gardyne Road campus, providing nutritious
meals and making an important contribution to the health of Scotland."
