Honorary degrees
From political commentator Andrew Marr to cancer survivor and sportswoman Jane Tomlinson, ten outstanding
individuals will be conferred with honorary degrees at the summer graduation ceremonies.
Principal Sir Alan Langlands welcomed the announcement of this year's honorary graduands saying, "We are
proud to be able to honour these ten distinguished individuals, each of whom has made a valuable and
different contribution to society. I hope that their success will inspire our students and we look forward to
conferring on them the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws - LLD."
The full list of honorary graduands includes Professor Gavin Brown, a distinguished mathematician and
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney; Colin Campbell QC, Dean of the Faculty of Advocates and
Alison Goligher, Managing Director of Schlumberger Oilfield Services, the world's largest oilfield services
company.
Also being awarded are:
Catherine Lockerbie, Director of the Edinburgh Book Festival;
Hamish MacInnes OBE BEM, international climber;
Professor Duncan Macmillan, Director of the Talbot Rice Gallery and author of several works on Scottish Art and artists;
Andrew Marr, the BBC's top political commentator;
Lord Naren Patel, an obstetrician of international standing; Larry Rolland, chair of University Court; and
Jane Tomlinson, who was nominated by the students for exceptional bravery and selflessness in the face of terminal cancer.
