Clear communications

An original exhibition showcasing artwork for and by people with the communications impairment Aphasia has opened at the Medical School in Ninewells Hospital.

Through a series of innovative printmaking workshops held by Christine Kingsley, Project Co-ordinator at DJCAD, the participants were able to use the rich vocabulary of visual language to highlight key aspects of Aphasia.

Aphasia affects all aspects of speaking, reading and writing, but by using colour, symbols and images to illustrate the words they want to express, the participants have created an alternative to written and spoken communication.

Images from their artwork have been used on 1,000 packs of 12 postcards, which were launched recently and circulated internationally.

It is hoped that the postcards will spread these positive messages from Dundee and encourage other groups to consider including artists and designers in service provision for people with Aphasia. Sets of postcards are available from Christine on 348287, email: c.m.kingsley@dundee.ac.uk
