Earlier this year, three of the University's Applied Computing graduates received £1,300 worth of funding and prize money in the first Scottish entrepreneurial scholarship for graduates. Stuart Reid, Stuart Anderson and Brian McNicoll - otherwise known as Dynamo Computing Solutions - were also given office space for four months at the University’s Springfield Incubator Unit.
The team has built on its earlier success and - with their initial four months now up - they plan to remain in Springfield until next July. The company has received ongoing support from John McKenzie, the University's Commercialisation Facilitator, who first encouraged them to start up the business.
Brian McNicoll explained, "John advised us that we should give ourselves a year in Springfield to get established and decide which area of the business to focus on. There are many different areas which we specialise in - but at the moment we’re mainly dealing with database, software and wireless applications development."
Their database solutions are already helping a number of clients (including the University's Research and Innovation Services) to handle day-to-day office management more efficiently. Integrating forms with databases, automating communications to customers to ensure that relationships are maintained and keeping track of incoming and outgoing enquiries are just some of the ways in which they are enabling offices to run more smoothly. Stuart Reid said, "We think that a lot of companies, and also departments in the University, think of IT services as just having someone fix your computer if it breaks down. We can actually build them bespoke applications, to fit their individual requirements that will really improve the efficiency of their department."
With just a few months of business under their belts, they have already landed another award. Their mobile phone first aid utility, MobiMedic, has been given a Handango Peoples Choice Award in the Best Healthcare Solution category, with a price of $5,000 worth of advertising.
