Chancellor's assessor retires

The man known as "the father of the University Court" has retired after a long and distinguished contribution to the University of Dundee.

Dr Donald Grant, one of the longest serving members of the University's governing body, attended his last Court meeting in June. Dr Grant has acted as assessor to the University Chancellor Sir James Black since 1993 serving on many committees including the finance committee, of which he was convener, and on the board of university spin out company AMCET.

Mr Larry Rolland, court convener, told members: "It is impossible to overegg the contribution of Donald Grant. We are extremely grateful for all the time, energy, talent and skill he has put into the University."

A chartered accountant by profession, Dr Grant qualified in 1948 after being commissioned into the Royal Artillery and war service as a major with the Highland Division when he fought at El Alamein and was stationed in the Libyan desert.

He was a partner for 36 years in Dundee chartered accountancy firm Moody Stuart & Robertson CA, which became after merger, Thomson McLintock & Co CA. He has served as director for a number of companies; was president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (1979-80), Chairman of Tayside Health Board (1984-91), chairman of Scottish Legal Aid Board (1986-91) as well as a trustee for a number of charitable trusts and appeals. In 1989 he was awarded the CBE and an honorary degree of LLD by the University of Dundee.

Sir James Black has appointed Court chairman Larry Rolland as his next assessor.
