World stage for University expert

The University of Dundee’s Professor Niamh Nic Daeid will this week represent the institution at one of the largest global celebrations of science.

Professor Nic Daeid, Director of the University’s Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science (LRCFS), is a panellist at the World Science Festival Brisbane 2019, which takes place in the Australian city from Wednesday 20 to Sunday 24 March.

Professor Nic Daeid will take part in several events at the Festival, which last year attracted 200,000 visitors. These will see her defend the need for high quality science to underpin forensic science, discuss the role of science in the courtroom with a senior member of the Australian judiciary, and take part in a panel session looking at how real life forensic science is much more than the version glamorised in popular culture.

Professor Nic Daeid said, “I am delighted to be invited to speak at the World Science Festival in Brisbane. What an amazing event to be involved in and such a wonderful opportunity to showcase the excellence and excitement of the research in forensic science that we are undertaking right in the heart of Dundee.”

An interview with Professor Nic Daeid will also be broadcast on Australian national radio during the course of the festival.

Professor Nic Daeid is a forensic chemist with specialisms including fire investigation, clandestine drug chemistry, explosives, and fingerprint enhancement. She has been involved in the development of policy and practice in forensic science for over 25 years and the many accolades she has received include the Distinguished Forensic Scientists Award from the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes for her dedication and commitment to improving forensic science globally.

The Leverhulme Research Centre in Forensic Science is a 10-year, £10million project funded by the Leverhulme Trust and directed by Professor Nic Daeid. Working closely with both Scottish and English judiciaries, forensic scientists and law enforcement, the aim of LRCFS is to ensure that there is robust science underpinning the forensic evidence presented within our Courts.
