Varsity slam dunk success for Dundee

Dundee’s largest amateur sporting event ended with a resounding victory for the University of Dundee this year, as they retained the Tay Varsity Challenge Trophy.
More than 600 sporting students went head-to-head during the inter-university event, with matches taking place across the city.
A record number of spectators came down to support the clubs, who whilst fiercely battling it out for a top spot, competed in good spirits.
The University of Dundee’s victory of 14-6 was confirmed with the sound of the klaxon which brought an end to the highly contested Men’s Basketball final.
Dundee guard Douglas Leslie, who scored 12 points in the game, darts past Abertay defence in the Men’s Basketball final to help secure a 68-37 finish.
Jacob McConkey, Dundee’s Sports Union President, said, “It is safe to say Varsity 2019 was a huge success for the University of Dundee. Some of the match-ups were really competitive and I have to thank everyone who competed.
“I would like to commend the staff and my Executive team for all of their efforts in helping the day run. And finally, thanks to all those who were spectating on the day and cheering on our teams. All these factors resulted in a resounding 14-6 win for the University of Dundee, meaning the trophy gets to stay in our cabinet for another year.”
Whilst Dundee’s clubs retain bragging rights for another year, the Universities continue to collaborate on major projects in and out with the city. Next month, hundreds of visitors are expected to attend the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) annual student conference, which will be jointly hosted by both institutions. The two-day event is expected to generate more than £250,000 for the local economy.
