University’s visiting scholars to forge new international links

Leading academics from around the world are bringing their skills to the University of Dundee as part of a major new initiative.

The University is welcoming experts from Canada, China, Hungary, New Zealand, and the United States for the inaugural Institute for Social Sciences Research (ISSR) Global Scholars Programme.

A collaboration between Dundee’s School of Social Sciences and School of Education and Social Work, the ISSR is using the initiative to forge international links through interdisciplinary research.

The quintet will spend up to three months in Scotland, collaborating with Dundee academics in research around the themes of Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Social Justice and Change, Innovation in Methods and Data Analytics, and Governance, Policy and Regulation.

Professor Lorraine van Blerk, ISSR Director, said, “We are delighted to welcome our visitors to the prestigious Global Scholar Programme at the University of Dundee.

“Their arrival is indicative of our ambitions to enhance our international profile and reputation for world-class interdisciplinary research.”

The first of the five scholars has already started work at Dundee, with the remaining four joining throughout May and June. Each will be paired with an academic based at the University to promote collaboration on their areas of expertise.

Dr Robert VanWynsberghe, from the Department of Education Studies at the University of British Columbia, has already arrived at Dundee. He will be joined by:

  • Dr Sam McColl, a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography at New Zealand’s Massey University.
  • Dr Luyao Che, Assistant Professor at Beijing’s China University of Political Science and Law.
  • Dr Rodger Payne, a Professor of Political Science at the University of Louisville.
  • Professor Stephen Stec, from the Department of Environmental Science at the Central European University in Budapest.

Professor Mark Smith, Co-Director of ISSR, added, “I am pleased with the interest shown in the Global Scholars Programme and excited by the opportunities the presence of such an impressive group of scholars offers to further internationalise our research activity across schools and disciplines.”
