Students to GIDE mobile museum process

More than 150 students and staff from eight countries will come together at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design next week to explore how V&A Dundee and other local institutions can transform into ‘mobile museums’.
DJCAD, part of the University of Dundee, is a member of the Group for International Design Education (GIDE), which will meet in the city from February 18-22. Attendees from Belgium, China, Germany, Italy. Portugal, Slovenia and Switzerland will join their Dundee peers in reimagining the museum as a mobile experience for the 21st century.
Forming interdisciplinary teams, the students will be asked to develop viable concepts and prototypes for new mobile museums that reflect cultural values, community outreach strategies and the relationship with technology and society.
Their task will be to explore ideas in their team through a mix of digital and analogue tools, techniques and skills. By the end of three days of workshops, the teams will have produced design proposals for one of three locations in Dundee - V&A Dundee, Verdant Works or The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum.
GIDE coordinator and event organiser Andy Milligan, Programme Director for Interior & Environmental Design at DJCAD, said, “We are thrilled to be leading on the 2019 ‘Mobile Museum’ workshop and delighted to host international guests. It’s been wonderful to have the support of University and V&A Dundee.
“Our workshop will provide the conceptual framework of a shared project delivered across all GIDE institutions in semester one 2019-20 and will also become the centrepiece of an exciting exhibition in Ljubljana, Slovenia this time next year.”

The Group for International Design Education is a network of eight higher education partners established in 2003. The GIDE network delivers annual inter-cultural design experiences in collaboration with local sponsors, industry, researchers and creative and cultural organisations.
These interdisciplinary workshop weeks bring students, academics and researchers together to explore the cultural, social and/or ethical dimensions of design. This workshop and an exhibition culminates in a later research publication.
