Simulation honour for pioneering Professor

Ronald Harden, Emeritus Professor of Medical Education at the University of Dundee, has been awarded a prestigious international prize recognising his contribution to healthcare.

Professor Harden received the Pioneer in Simulation award at a meeting of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) in San Antonio, Texas. The Society is the leading international body concerned with simulation and the Pioneer accolade is the highest honour it awards.

Simulation, well established in the airline industry, has been used increasingly in the education of healthcare professionals to ensure that they have the necessary technical skills and to reduce errors in practice. Professor Harden is recognised as one of the leading international figures in medical education and was influential in the development of simulation in the training of healthcare professionals.

Professor Harden said, “I am honoured and delighted to receive the recognition for my work in this area, which has been made possible only through collaboration with the individuals with whom I have had the privilege to work and the support and facilities provided in Dundee.”

In bestowing the award upon Professor Harden, the SSH said the honour recognised “his pioneering work in medical education that has had enormous impact around the world, and also in advancing simulation-based education assessment across the breadth of healthcare professions”.

Professor Harden was formerly Teaching Dean at Dundee as well as director of the University’s Centre for Medical Education. The adoption of a clinical competence assessment he developed as a gold standard internationally is among the many achievements of a career that also saw him receive an OBE for his contribution to Medical Education.
