Professor Andreas Melzer named Fellow of Academy of Medical Sciences

Professor Andreas Melzer, of the University of Dundee, has been elected to join the prestigious Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
The Academy of Medical Sciences is the independent body in the UK representing the diversity of medical science. Fellows are been elected for their outstanding contributions to biomedical and health science, leading research discoveries, and translating developments into benefits for patients and the wider society.
Andreas Melzer is Professor of Medical Technology at the University and Founding Director of the Institute for Medical Science and Technology (IMSaT), a joint venture between Dundee and the University of St Andrews.
He is a leading authority on medical technology and related clinical procedure in the field of image guidance. His work has covered the invention of novel instruments for minimal access surgery and the development of devices and clinical procedures for interventional MRI.
He has worked internationally as an enthusiastic ambassador and educator in the field of medical technology, training PhD students from diverse physics, engineering and clinical science specialties.
“I am delighted to receive this honour from the Academy of Medical Sciences,” said Professor Melzer.
“My work is in a field that is vital to making sure technology can be developed and applied to the benefit of our health and it is extremely encouraging to see this recognised in this way.”
Professor Melzer is one of 50 leading biomedical and health sciences figures to have been made new Fellows of the Academy. This year's elected Fellows have expertise spanning global health, virology, women’s health, medical statistics, health policy, cancer genetics, allergy and emergency care medicine, among many other fields.

Their collective wisdom is a national asset to guide research and policy aimed at tackling pressing health challenges.
“It brings me great pleasure to congratulate the new Fellows, each of whom has pushed the boundaries of their individual research field. I am always delighted to see the Fellowship expand, adding fresh talent to our invaluable pool of high quality guidance, advice and expertise.”
The new Fellows will be formally admitted to the Academy at a ceremony on 26 June 2019.
