Preparations under way for Chinese New Year

Students and staff at the University of Dundee are getting into celebratory spirit today ahead of Chinese New Year.

A series of events will take place across campus ahead of Tuesday’s festivities, which will welcome in the Year of the Pig.

An inaugural celebration hosted by the University’s Architecture and Urban Planning department attracted more than 100 guests last year, with even larger numbers anticipated to attend this year’s event.

The occasion will coincide with a special exhibition staged by students from Wuhan University, charting the history of their homeland. Featuring artwork, photographs, and calligraphy, China Through the Ages will run in Dundee’s Architectural Review Space from Tuesday 5 to Thursday 7 February.

More than 800 Chinese students currently study at the University of Dundee, with over 30 arriving annually as part of a collaboration between Dundee and Wuhan University.

Architecture students spend the first four years of their course studying at the prestigious Asian institution, before completing their final year of study in Scotland.

Alda Ritchie, Wuhan Programme Manager at the University of Dundee, said, “As the most important date in the Chinese calendar, Chinese New Year is a fantastic opportunity to bring together all of our students and staff to share in this exciting cultural celebration.

“The University of Dundee hosts a vibrant community of Chinese students and we are incredibly proud of our close ties with Wuhan University, which is one of China’s foremost educational establishments.

“As well as celebrating the Year of the Pig, the accompanying China Through the Ages exhibition, put together by our Chinese students, will provide visitors with a comprehensive and thought-provoking look at the country’s fascinating history.”

China Through the Ages, takes place in the Architectural Review Space, Architecture and Urban Planning, School of Social Sciences, Level 6, Matthew Building, from Tuesday 5 to Thursday 7 February. Admission is free.
