Memorial service to support bereaved this Christmas

Christmas may be marketed as a season of celebration, but for those coping with the loss of a loved one the festive period can be particularly daunting.

That is why the University of Dundee is inviting those who have experienced a bereavement to come together for a moment of reflection at its annual Christmas Memorial Service.

Now in its fifth year, the service in the University’s Chaplaincy Centre gives people the opportunity to participate in a short service of remembrance, including music and the lighting of candles, providing a moment of solace to those who have lost somebody special in their lives.

Gordon Campbell, University Honorary Chaplain, said, “Christmas can be an extremely difficult time, particularly following a bereavement. It is easy to look around and see happy faces everywhere, but for those who are grieving this can add to feelings of loneliness or isolation.

“The festive period is a time where we have been used to creating special memories with those closest to us, and when they are no longer there it can be difficult to come to terms with.

“Our Christmas Memorial Service is a gathering where anybody from the community can light a candle, reflect, and pay their respects to those that are missed. We invite all members of the public, as well as University staff and students, to attend.”

The Christmas Memorial Service takes place in the University of Dundee Chaplaincy Centre, Cross Row, from 7-8pm on Wednesday 4 December. Refreshments will be served following the service.
